Just a few reminders for you all today....

1--Freestyle/Greco season starts today at Level Up. We need all returning wrestlers to participate in this. There are flexible options on training dates that should easily accommodate all spring sports athletes. We are asking for a 90 minute a week commitment to getting better.

2--Be sure that you all are registering for a weight lifting course for next school year. If it's not on your schedule, you'll be required to take it before school each day.

3-- The banquet is Tuesday evening at 6:30 in the cafe'. Be sure to dress nicely. Attached is an info sheet on it. I'm looking forward to seeing you all, having some good food, and recognizing our program.

Lastly, I was informed this week that RJ Weston, Isaiah Gadsden, and Myles Williams all were named to the Marietta Daily Journal's All-County 1st Team!  Those 3 wrestlers, as well as Max Peterson are also being recognized Monday evening in the Lassiter Concert Hall by the Cobb County Wrestling Association at 6:30. Isaiah was named Cobb County's Sportsman of the Year!

That's a wrap all! The 2017-18 GHSA season is all done. On behalf of myself and the other coaches, we'd like to thank all of you for your support. Seems like forever ago in October when we started. A lot of good things happened over the course of the year. I'll put a few stats below, but will cover a lot at the banquet March 13th.  (By the way, I'll take those RSVP's now)....form is attached

The State Tournament was great.  We took 4 wrestlers and 3 came home with medals. Please see Lassiter webite under the Team Results tab for more info.

http://www.lassiterwrestling.org/page/show/707959-team-results

1 thing I'd like to keep repeating is the fact that if we want continued success, we need all returning wrestlers to commit to an off-season plan.  100% participation in Freestyle/Greco season along with registering for weight training next year is what we are shooting for.  It'll make all the difference in the world I promise!

Well done all! Yesterday marked the start of our post-season. We sent 8, plus 3 alternates on to the Sectional Tournament at Mill Creek HS Friday and Saturday.

Practice this week will be for the 8 moving on plus anyone that does not have a spring sport and would like more drill time on the room.

I’ll send a more detailed follow-up later in the week with gear return, banquet info, and spring/summer plans as well as some other extra info.

Not much to update this week. The weather put a damper on things causing us to lose practice time and a tournament. I felt going to Archer yesterday after not being on the mat for 4 days was not a good idea. We got some good work in at Lassiter; however I asked all the guys if they'd spend 30 minutes today going for a run. Help me out by reminding them :)

Big week ahead! We are the defending Traditional Area Champions AND we host this year. A repeat in our own gym would be great. The Area Tournament is the 1st tournament of the post-season. The top 4 wrestlers from each weight class move onto the Sectional Tournament the following Friday/Saturday at Mill Creek HS in Gwinnett. There are 2 Sectional Tournaments. The other is at Lowndes HS. The top 8 from each Sectional move onto the State Tournament in Macon.

As a result of the snow and ice, we lost our Senior Night this past Wednesday. We will be honoring our seniors during the lunch break Saturday at Lassiter.

Points to Note:

1- All wrestlers not moving on to sectionals will be free to leave for spring sports after Saturday the 27th.

2- Anyone wanting to keep their warm ups, or have lost items----Each piece is $15

3- The Lassiter Wrestling banquet is Tuesday March 13th.  We have done a traditional potluck dinner in the past. More details to come.

Great Saturday! We won 5 matches in a row to win the Region Duals Title for the 2nd year in a row. This year was way more satisfying than last year as weather issues didn't come into play. The most amazing part of this is that we did it with 10 freshmen on this year's team after graduating 8 last year!!  This puts us as the top seed from our Region to go to the State Duals tournament next weekend in Macon. Be sure to pick a copy up of today's MDJ.

I'll have a roster available tomorrow of who will be going to the State Tournament. I'll have our exact departure time set tomorrow, but we'll leave Lassiter sometime Thursday morning. I'll have permission slips that will need to be completed and the wrestlers also need to know that they are responsible for any missed school work those 2 days!

We need to be at weigh-ins by about 2:45 Thursday and have our 1st dual at 5:00 PM that day. From that point on, our schedule is determined by our results.

I booked rooms for the team at the Holiday Inn Macon North 3953 River Pl Dr. Macon, GA 31210 if anyone is interested in staying with us.  If you have the availability to go, I'd highly suggest it.  If you were at Region yesterday and saw the excitement and atmosphere, you can multiply that x10 being at the Macon Coliseum!

Items of Note:

1- Due to us leaving Thursday, the match at Kell HS on Wednesday has been cancelled

2- We have regular practice scheduled for MLK Day, Monday 1/15 (4-6:00PM)

3- Team photos are scheduled for right after school 1/16 (Tuesday).  Package info will come home

4- Senior Night is 1/17 against Dunwoody.  It's Wrestling Spirit Night! The Sports Marketing Dept has worked to make this a special night. Event starts at 4:30 with wrestling at 5:30.  It's a White-Out for that night, so we ask everyone to wear white shirts. You can invite family, friends, and neighbors. We want a packed gym for our senior's last home dual!

5- The Lassiter Wrestling website is updated weekly with news, pictures, team results, and other info. Be sure to check it out! In addition, if you have not already done so, go sign up for our Instagram and Twitter pages. There is also a Shutterfly page with pictures for everyone to download; however you must receive an invite to become a member. Parents

Here is our LAST newsletter of 2017!

We had a great week of practice that concluded with a very successful 2 days at the Lambert Inv. We were missing a few wrestlers. There was some very tough competition there with nationally ranked Brandon FLA winning the overall team title. (interesting sidenote: they were the subject of a documentary called The Streak. They once won 459 duals in a row)

As a result of our awesome week/weekend, the coaches have given the wrestlers off until Tuesday! Hope you all enjoy your New Years!

Items of Note:

We have awesome looking embroidered trucker hats available in a very limited quantity.  If anyone would like one, see me soon before I offer them to the youth program.  They are $20 each.

Alyson Weston has uploaded hundreds of pictures on our Shutterfly app.  They are all free and available for you to save.  If you have not joined yet, please do so.  There are some great shots I'm sure most of you would like.  https://lassiterhighschoolwrestling.shutterfly.com/

Finally, as 2018 starts, so does the final stretch of our season.  This is when the stuff counts the most.  I'm proud of the accolades we got in 2017, but we need to keep focusing ahead.  Region Duals, State Duals, Region, Sectionals, and State are what matter the most for us.  The team needs to maintain their good practice attendance and work ethic for us to be successful in the home stretch.

As spring sports start up, any wrestler NOT competing in the post-season will be dismissed AFTER the January 27th Region Tournament.

Parents, hope you all are doing ok and have power and heat!  It was obviously a short wrestling week for us.  Wednesday didn't go well for us.  We came into Roswell 7-1 after winning the McEachern Inv.  We left 8-3 and 0-2 in the region.  We had some gaps due to a few weight issues that I think we have under control now.  We had a great practice Thursday and I feel we are back on the right path.  Allatoona would have gone very well for us in my opinion.  Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate.

Team Leaders:

Top 5 Wins 1 Weston, Robert 19 2 Gadsden, Isaiah 17 3 Peterson, Max 12 4 Williams, Myles 12 5 Baraji, Zachary 12

Top 5 Falls 1 Weston, Robert 14 2 Gadsden, Isaiah 12 3 Peterson, Max 11 4 Baraji, Zachary 11 5 Tsogas, Michael 8

Top 5 Takedowns 1 Weston, Robert 33 2 Williams, Myles 26 3 Gadsden, Isaiah 23 4 Tsogas, Michael 12 5 Peterson, Max 12

Points of Note:

1-The status of our Wednesday night match is still up in the air at this point.  If we are out Monday, I think I'm going to cancel going so that we can catch up on training and cardio.

2-This upcoming weekend is huge for us.  We host the Cobb Co Invitational Friday and Saturday and a Team GA Beginner Tournament Sunday.  The JV wrestlers are going to Kell Friday and Saturday for the County JV Inv.  I'll have rosters posted as soon as we are able to get back to practice.

3-Sunday, all wrestlers are expected to come help out.  Some will be working tables, some will be officiating matches, others may help in the concession area.  I'll need people from about 11:30-5:00 that day.

4- If we DO have school Monday, we have team pictures scheduled for directly after school.

5- I'll have a practice schedule done very soon for finals week.  We want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to go to any needed study sessions so that they do well on finals.

Parents, it's been a busy, yet successful week for Lassiter Wrestling.  We defeated Paulding Co. and Centennial Wednesday night at home bringing our dual record to 7-1.  We took the momentum into Saturday at the McEachern Invitational.  As a team, Lassiter finished 1st overall.  The nearest team was 25 points behind us.  Lassiter had individual champions in RJ Weston, Isaiah Gadsden, Max Peterson, and Frankie Valle.  Mikey Tsogas was 2nd, Zach Baraji 3rd, and Beau Fischer was 4th.  Isaiah Gadsden was named Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler.  There's a nice MDJ story/picture today.

Tuesday evening, our junior program traveled to Cherokee HS and won over 50 individual matches.  Our entire Lassiter wrestling program (k-12) now has 90 wrestlers!!!

This upcoming Wednesday (6th), we go to Roswell HS to take on Roswell, Cherokee, and Duluth.  There will be many JV matches as well so we hope everyone gets at least 1 match, probably 2.  Wrestling starts at 5:30 PM.

Friday and Saturday (8th and 9th), the Varsity team travels to Alltoona for the Parlay Invitational.  Wrestling starts at 5:30 and 9:00 and the respective days.

Team Leaders

Top 5--- Wins 1. Weston, Robert 16 2. Gadsden, Isaiah 15 3. Baraji, Zachary 12 4. Peterson, Max 10 5. Williams, Myles 10

Top 5 Takedowns--- 1. Weston, Robert 27 2. Williams, Myles 24 3. Gadsden, Isaiah 18 4. Peterson, Max 10 5. Baraji, Zachary 10

Points of Note:

1- I anticipate all spiritwear orders to be in this week

2- Daniel Gadsden sent out an email about the Coastal Clash earlier this week.  Please be sure to see it and let us know if there are any questions.

3- We have optional protein shake mix available for the wrestlers after each practice. They do need to provide their own shaker bottles though and keep them clean.

4- We do the wrestler's practice gear laundry each day. They've been told though to wash their competition warm-ups after each event.  Please help us out by reminding them.

Thanks again all and Go Trojans!

Good day of wrestling yesterday at Collins Hill .  We walked away with a lot of wins and experience.  It was nice to see so many parents make the drive to Lawrenceville to watch us all.  Wednesday we defeated Westminster by a score of 54-24.  The guys are progressing nicely.

As we enter Thanksgiving break, I'd like to take a minute and thank all of you for your support.  Our program wouldn't run without the hard work you all put in.  I hope you get to enjoy a few days with family.

Wrestling Newsletter-11/12/17

Parents and wrestlers, thanks again for yesterday. Everything ran smoothly and it couldn’t have been done without you. You all got a special mention in today’s MDJ.

We keep stressing our 1% improvement goal.  Making a 1% gain each day adds up and by the end of the season, we’ll see gains of well over 100%!  If your wrestler didn’t do well yesterday, it’s not the end of the world.  It’s a long season and they’ll get there.  Just help us out by reinforcing positivity.  They should keep their heads up and stay motivated! It’s not a quick or easy sport to learn.

The season is in full swing now.  We are at Westminster HS this Wednesday the 15th.  Our bus leaves Lassiter at 3:45 and our dual starts at 5:30.  JV and Varsity is planned.  We should be back before 8:00 PM.  We then go to Collins Hill Saturday Nov. 18th for the Defense Soap Invitational.  This also is JV and Varsity.  Our bus is scheduled to leave Lassiter at 7:00 and we should be back by 5:00 PM.

JR wrestling also finished week 1.  We’ve got 53 wrestlers with a few more on their way.  We are one of, if not the biggest youth program in area! We have kids ranging from 5 to 14 in sizes 35 lbs. to 170lbs.

Freshman boost numbers, bring influx of talent into Lassiter wrestling program By:Carlton White, Marietta Daily Journal

After seeing a steady decline in wrestlers staying on as part of the program over the past four years — falling from 27 in 2014 to 19 last season — Lassiter wrestling coach Matt Brickley has seen the development in his youth league finally pay off.

With an influx of competitive, young talent, the Trojans claimed their sixth area dual championship and challenged for Cobb County and area traditional titles.

“Wrestling’s been down across the board nationally,” Brickley said. “but now we have about 100 kids in the program, from our youth league to junior varsity and varsity. We’ve put a lot of work in the junior program. It’s taken a while to get going, and now it’s paying dividends with about 70 kids at the minimum.”

With the expectation of having 12 to 15 freshmen wrestlers switching between varsity and junior varsity every year, Brickley believes he has the necessary depth for Lassiter’s wrestling program to build for the future from the ground up.

The Trojans have a successful history dating back more than 30 years, starting with former longtime coach Steve Day. Lassiter’s six area dual titles came in back-to-back years (2003-04, 2011-12 and 2017-18), while the eight traditional titles came in 1985-89, 2002-03 and 2017. Although the Trojans have never won a team state title, several individuals wrestlers have gone on to win championships.

Brickley is counting on his new influx of talent to join that list of champions in future seasons, if not this year, most notably with freshman RJ Weston, who won the area title at 132 pounds and is 42-3 on the season.

“RJ is amazing and hasn’t lost to anybody in 7A,” Brickley said. “He was a kids’ state champion, a Greco-Roman national champion and he was third in freestyle. He’s the type of kid that lives and breathes wrestling, and he nearly has a 4.0 GPA. He could win several state titles.”

Brickley needed an influx in talent after graduating eight seniors last year. Headlined by Weston, Lassiter’s current varsity roster includes 10 freshmen, with six — Bo Fischer (106 pounds), Ryan Preston (113), Parker Bell (126), Weston, Scott Smith-Dias (195) and Francisco Valle (220) — in the starting lineup. Weston and Smith-Dias advanced to this weekend’s sectional at Mill Creek.

“It’s nice to see the body of work come full-circle,” Brickley said. “Some of these kids have been with me three to four years with the junior program, and some of the guys are new. It’s great to see them stick it out, which says a lot about our coaching staff that the kids are improving and staying with the team.

“You give these young kids a taste of victory as ninth-graders and they’ll want to come out. They’ll tell their friends and you’ll have more people at the meets. Folks will stay around for a while if they have something to look forward to and be excited about.”

That is part of Weston’s plan. A year-round wrestler, he has taken it upon himself to help guide his freshman teammates and keep them interested in wrestling.

“I plan to get the other freshmen to join me wrestling year-round,” Weston said. “That will help us over time.”

Weston enjoys how he and his teammates are part of the building blocks to Lassiter’s future, and he is looking forward to their sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

“It’s cool to be a part of this,” Weston said. “It’ll be fun to watch us grow and change over the years. Our seniors last year were good role models. My group will have even more pressure on us next year because we’ll need to fill some more lineup gaps with younger guys, but by my junior year, we’ll be back.”

Smith-Dias is also looking forward to the future. He said there is pressure on him to do well this season, but he knows there aren’t any high expectations regarding his performance. He said he and the other freshmen have good work ethic, and the seniors have been helping them as well.

“Right now, we have limitations, but the future looks good,” Smith-Dias said. “It’s fun to be on the team as a freshman, and it’s cool to be on varsity. Sometimes, you wish you didn’t have this position, but then you come to appreciate it.

“Through the years, I know we’ll get better. As long as we keep an eye on the prize, we’ll be as successful as the seniors.”
